Lo sviluppo ellittico (anche a livello di sceneggiatura) attraversa tutta la narrazione filmica, rendendo quella di Barnum (non a caso l'inventore del circo a tre piste, fatto di cerchi occasionalmente intersecabili) una cosmologia i cui i pianeti orbitano l'uno in relazione all'altro (alcuni convinti di essere il centro del proprio universo), seguendo una linea obliqua che li accosta e poi bruscamente li separa, e facendo del momento in cui maggiormente si accostano (un bacio, il tocco di una mano) lo stesso che li scaglia il più lontano possibile gli uni dagli altri.
